Hi! My name is Grace Song and I am a children’s librarian and artist based in the Bay Area, California. I grew up looking at my mother’s art, which has heavily influenced my use of paper and my love for collage (her art is projected on me in the first photo!). I was trained initially as a fine artist and ended up with a degree in art history from UCLA, where I first started to work in museums and libraries. I dream of writing and illustrating children's books one day. For now, I am learning learning learning, very slowly. I currently love practicing my drawing skills, using colored pencils, and trying to sew. I like to incorporate natural elements into my art when I can, and I love exploring different textures and how different media play with each other. I collect paper (my favorite is hanji, handmade Korean paper) as well as vintage fabric pieces from flea markets, and try to use them in my pieces. My work is usually about memory, nostalgia, and God, mostly shown through mixed media collage.
At the library, I like to teach children's art classes whenever I can. I've done series of classes on art history for both adults and children, stamp-making, bookbinding, paper dolls, papermaking, paper bojagi, and more. I feel so much joy when I witness the magic of a child's genius, un-self conscious hand.
I love thrifting, knitting, eating home-cooked Korean food, reading, writing, gardening, watching movies, decorating for cute cozy parties (Pinterest-er since 2011), making my Halloween costumes every year, and spending time at home with my husband.
I always tell myself that one day, I shall be a cohesive artist. Today is not that day. View my work to witness the incohesion.
I use Instagram occasionally.
I also write occasionally.
Join me in my reading journey.
